Mercedes was born on July 9, 1921 in Leon, Kansas, the daughter of Ed and Faith (Kenoyer) Erwin. She married Freeman Hulse on April 10, 1943 in Selma, Alabama where Freeman was stationed at the time. Freeman died in August 2004. Together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Mercedes was a 1939 graduate of Leon High School.
Two dear friends were Dr. Harry and Dorothy Last. Dr. Last recognized her strong work ethic and sent Mercedes to nursing school at SBA Hospital. She graduated in 1942. The family lived in several locations, and returned to El Dorado in 1959 when he was transferred. They'd lived here ever since. Mercedes was Director of Nursing at Knutson Manor Nursing Home. Later it became Lakepoint Nursing Home and she continued as their Director, retiring 30 years ago. She kept in touch with many former coworkers through the years.
