Melvin E. Canfield, 84, died on Aug. 5, 2017
A lion and leader has passed. Melvin E. Canfield, 84 of Andover, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, surrounded by his family.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, , at Faith Baptist Church, 417 W. Central, Andover. All are welcome.
Melvin was born Oct. 29, 1932, and grew up in Augusta. He was an accomplished athlete and president of his high school senior class. After graduation he met Genevieve “Jean” Duffey and they married in 1952. Melvin served in the Air Force and was preparing for OCS when a tragic accident occurred at McConnell AFB and cut short his military career. He went on to work in the aircraft industry and retired from Ratheon after 36 years.
Known for his commitment to family and community, Melvin and Jean were married for 64 years. Together they raised four children; Ken, Kris, Linda and Jeff Canfield. Melvin was active in youth activities being a coach and scoutmaster, as well as a respected neighborhood leader. In addition to his professional career, he provided affordable housing to many in Wichita and Augusta.
After retirement Melvin continued to work on his rental property and care for his aging parents. He was always available to help or encourage family members or those in need. His generosity and counsel was well known.
Melvin is survived by: his wife, Jean Canfield; his four children; 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Being a very private man Melvin acknowledged his need and dependence on God several weeks before his passing. He will be cherished, missed and remembered by all who knew him.
