The headlines could proclaim that of a local boy “Who made good”-
A native son who experienced success in business and as a major contributor to the community.
John Banks was born in El Dorado, graduated from El Dorado High School, married his high school sweetheart, stayed in his hometown raised his family here and took a family business to an amazing new level of success.
When you live in your hometown, you can’t very well avoid your age. John was born in 1945 to Earl and Hilda Banks.
He attended Skelly Elementary School, El Dorado Junior High and El Dorado High School, where he graduated in 1963.
Throughout high school, John was involved in football, basketball and track. He still actually holds a school record in track because the rules have changed for measurements.
John went to Butler Community College on a track scholarship, then on to Kansas State University and enlisted in the National Guard. He graduated from Wichita State University.
In 1969, he married Michele Clark, that high school sweetheart. He was the athlete and she was the cheerleader. Their family has grown to include two daughters and their families. Staci Banks-Hehenberger is married to Rodney and they have two children, Abby and Maggie and Katie Banks-Todd and Patrick are the parents of Isabelle and Benjamin.
As a young man, John stepped into the family business—Banks Construction Company, and purchased the business in 1980, growing it into a highly successful business with many employees and offices in Kansas, Oklahoma and California. He sold the business in 2000, but his retirement led him into other ventures.
He developed Sweet Tree Properties, a development across from El Dorado High School, restored the Historic Trombla Building at Main and Central, and continued his service to the community with with charitable involvement as a trustee on the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital Board. He has funded scholarships forlocal students to go to Butler, supports the EHS drama department, has provided trucks for parades and other activities in the community, gives service to Trinity United Methodist Church and is a continued supporter of Michele and daughter Katie’s drama events and other community activities. Of course, all this is in between being a dedicated grandfather.
It is with appreciation of his support to El Dorado schools, business and the community, that John has been selected as the El Dorado High School Alumnus of the year. Presenting him the award are members of the executive board of the EHS Alumni Association.
