Partnership receives recognition

A partnership between Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Mary K. Connell Fund for Wellness, the Connell family and the El Dorado YMCA started the El Dorado Working on Wellness (EWOW) Program, which received recognition from USD 490 recently.
The El Dorado School District recognized the three groups as Friends of Education for 2018. Tim Connell was recognized as a Community Leader, SBAMH as a Community/Civic Organization and the YMCA for Business/Partner Activities Friends of Education.
According to the District press release, each year the Kansas Confidence in Education Task Force works with school districts to recognize community partners that make a positive impact on public education.
The release stated, “Their diligent support of student and staff wellness through the creation and sustaining of the EWOW partnership has resulted in the creation of a middle school after school wellness program and staff wellness teams at every school.
”Their efforts and commitment to wellness have made a positive impact on our schools by both teaching staff and students how to make healthy life choices and providing an opportunity to put what they learn into practice.”
EWOW is funded through the Foundation’s Mary K. Connell Fund for Wellness, Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital and a Kansas Health Foundation Grant and just completed the last of the El Dorado schools this past year as a group of teachers from the high school took part in the program.
This partnership and efforts to improve community wellness was recognized through these awards.
“We are pleased to have received recognition as a Friend of Education from USD 490,” said SBA President and CEO Jim Kirkbride. “We are happy to be able to partner with the schools and improve wellness in our community and especially for our youth. It is through our partnership with the YMCA and Connell family that these programs have been a success.”
Tim Connell has helped with the continuation of the program, which was inspired by his mother.
“It’s a very nice honor to get the Friends Award, but of course I couldn’t do anything unless the Y, the school district and Hospital were all working together to help us,” Tim Connell said.
He said there was a recent report saying childhood obesity wasn’t getting any better. “One of the goals is to improve wellness of kids, so we have more to do to keep kids healthier and have lifelong physical activity.”
Jessica Rall, El Dorado YMCA Branch Manager, added, “It’s been a great thing to work with the Hospital, school district and Connell family to try to better serve the El Dorado community, starting with our teachers and trying to continue that partnership to help the youth. We’re very honored for USD 490 to recognize us and for the fact, they consider us a really strong partner.”
To conclude the EWOW program, checks for $288 were presented to Jefferson/Lincoln Elementary, El Dorado High and Grandview Elementary schools. The funds will be used for items to help kids be more active.
