Jeremiah Rather of Andover Middle School won first place at the Butler County Spelling Bee on Friday, Feb. 2. Butler Community College (BCC) hosted the annual competition, and Cory Teubner, associate professor of English at BCC, was the bee's pronouncer.
Grace Schmidt of Circle Middle School in Benton won second place, and Ethan Ellis of Wheatland Elementary in Andover won third. Rather, Schmidt and Ellis will now advance to the Sunflower Spelling Bee on March 3 at Fort Hays State University. The Sunflower Spelling Bee is hosted by The Kansas Press Association, and the winner qualifies for participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Rather is excited to compete in the Sunflower Spelling Bee.
"I'm looking forward to seeing better spellers and harder words," he said.
This is BCC’s 10th year sponsoring the county-wide spelling bee. Kids rom 27 elementary and middle schools participated in the event, which is conducted by library services at the college.
