HollyFrontier oil refinery in El Dorado is celebrating 100 years this month. Starting as Midland Refining in 1917, the largest refinery in Kansas has gone through a few name and ownership changes until becoming the HollyFrontier Corporation in 2012.
Currently, HollyFrontier handles up to 163,000 barrels per day and has 468 employees. The plant manager is Darin Rains. HollyFrontier employees, retirees and their families attended a 100-year celebration on July 17 at the El Dorado Civic Center to commemorate the anniversary. Entertainment and food was provided by Allison’s Fun, Inc.
The refinery has had a significant historical impact, globally and locally. It was largest supplier and producer of oil for World War I. In addition, the Butler County population grew from 23,000 in 1910 to 43,000 by 1920 due to the area's oil boom. In 1918, there were eight refineries in the El Dorado and Augusta area. Yet, HollyFrontier is the only one left in that area today.
