Jennifer Pharris, DO, has joined SBA Medical Group – Family Practice and began seeing patients at the Susan B. Allen Medical Clinic in Augusta this month.

“I don’t remember a time I wasn’t interested in medicine,” Dr. Pharris said. “Ever since I was very young, I thought I wanted to go into medicine. The more I learned about it, the more I was pulled toward it. It just clicked for me.”

She liked the idea of Family Medicine because it can be anything you want it to be.

“You can remain a generalist and see a little of everything, or you can tailor your practice to a specific niche you really enjoy,” she explained. “Also, Family Medicine is exciting, you never know what your day will bring. It keeps life interesting.”

One area of medicine in which Dr. Pharris has a strong passion is Obesity Medicine, for which she is currently working toward a board certification.

“Obesity is such a complex disease and we need more physicians who understand it and how to care for patients who suffer from it to help them achieve a healthier life while, at the same time, preventing devastating diseases that often develop in patients with obesity,” she said.

Dr. Pharris earned her Doctor of Osteopathy from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008 and completed her residency at Cox Family Medicine in Springfield, Mo. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine and is certified in Basic Life Support.

She has worked in a variety of practices, including a multi-specialty group in Springfield, Mo.; a community health center in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and most recently, a hospital-owned group practice in Johnstown, Colo.

“The relationships I build with individuals, families and communities,” she said of what she enjoys most about practicing medicine. “I love hearing people’s stories and am honored they invite me to be a part of their life journey. It is incredible to be part of a patient’s life and help coach them into a healthier being. There is nothing more humbling than knowing someone trusts you with major decisions in their life or their loved one’s life.”

She is looking forward to starting her practice at SBA. She said it was the people who influenced her decision to come to SBA.

“We are relocating to Kansas for my husband’s residency and I had the opportunity to interview at several locations in Wichita and surrounding areas,” Dr. Pharris said. “SBA really stood out as a welcoming community.”

She hopes to be a partner with individuals and groups in the community, striving to make the community healthier.

“I hope to bring knowledge that will inspire people of all ages to become active participants in being the healthiest individuals, families and community they can be,” she said.

Dr. Pharris and her husband, John, are high school sweethearts. They celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary in June. He just graduated from medical school in May and is beginning his venture into Family Medicine with a residency at Wesley. They have four children, ages 11, 7, 4 and 2. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, entertaining, reading, cooking and baking, and spending time with her family.

Dr. Pharris will see patients by appointment, while the Clinic, which opened in early 2014, will continue to see patients on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. The clinic will also continue to offer outpatient laboratory and diagnostic imaging services. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Pharris, contact the Susan B. Allen Medical Clinic at 316-558-8668.
