Dr. Azad adds specialty procedures to SBA Orthopedics Clinic
Vikrant Azad, M.D., brings several specialty procedures to the SBA Orthopedics Clinic.
Dr. Azad came to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital last fall.
“I was looking at joining a smaller town hospital which has multiple services to offer,” he said.
That led him to SBA.
Dr. Azad primarily does hip, knee and ankle replacements, as well as all foot and ankle issues. Some of the newer surgeries he brings to SBA are Anterior total hip replacement, Ankle joint replacement and Ankle arthroscopy from back of ankle.
He said, many people end up going to Wichita for many Orthopedics surgeries, such as for the anterior total hip replacement surgery, not realizing these surgeries are available at SBA.
Anterior Hip Replacement uses an approach to the front of the joint, rather than the side or back. It allows for quicker rehabilitation and a shorter hospital stay because the hip is replaced without detachment of the muscles from the pelvis or femur. This procedure allows the surgeon to work between the muscles and tissues, minimizing muscle damage.
Another procedure Dr. Azad offers that not all doctors do is an ankle arthroscopy from the back. He said this is one of his favorite procedures.
He also offers ankle replacements. He said most people don’t even know replacement surgery is an option for the ankle. Many people get treated for ankle arthritis by ankle joint fusion without being considered for ankle replacement surgery.
In addition, Dr. Azad does trauma and shoulder arthroscopy, knee and ankle scopes, shoulder scope and rotator cuff problems. Other orthopedic services offered include: carpal/tarsal release, trigger thumb, tendon and ligament injuries or degeneration, bone and joint infections, and adult and pediatric fractures.
Dr. Azad received his medical degree from Goa Medical College in Goa, India and completed his orthopedics residency at Maulana Azad Medical College and Associated Hospitals in New Delhi, India. He came to the United States in 2005 and completed a Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, a Foot and Ankle Fellowship at the University of Alabama – Birmingham, and an Adult Reconstruction (Arthroplasty) Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University. He then began practicing in Hutchinson in 2013, before coming to SBA.
"The wonderful complexity of the human body and ability to help others, as well as the respect and appreciation one gets in return, motivated me to go into field of medicine," said Dr. Azad. "My ideal place of practice is a relatively smaller town hospital with multiple specialties, as I feel this combination allows me to connect with my patients and hospital’s administration, one-on-one, which allows for quicker changes and improves quality of care for my patients. I saw this combination at Susan B. Allen."
His wife is a hospitalist in Wichita and they have two sons, ages 8 and 3.
