Maxime Coles, M.D., brings expertise in general orthopedics, traumatology, sports medicine, hand and pediatric surgery to the SBA Medical Group – Orthopedics.

Dr. Coles always wanted to be a doctor. “Since I was a kid I wanted to become a physician,” he said. “It was something I had to do. I didn’t see myself doing anything else.”

He originally wanted to be a gynecologist but changed his focus after his internship. Orthopedics had been his second love at the time and he decided to pursue that field. Now he doesn’t think there is anything else that would make him happier.

“It’s something positive,” Dr. Coles said. “When I see a patient with an injury or pain issue and I’m able to provide instant relief, it’s a great feeling. My love for orthopedics will never change.”

Dr. Coles graduated from Universite d’Etat d’Haiti College of Medicine in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He performed his residency in Orthopedic and Traumatology at the State University Hospital of Haiti in 1976 through 1979 and completed a fellowship in hand orthopedics in 1979 as well. He then moved to the United States in 1980, where he completed general surgery and orthopedic surgery residencies at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. from 1980 through 1987. He also has training in prosthetic rehabilitation for the upper and lower extremity from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Ill.

He has worked at Meharry Medical Center in Tennessee, Bridgeport Yale Health in Connecticut, Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, Girard Medical Center in Girard and Sebasticook Valley Health in Pittsfield, Maine.

Dr. Coles is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a senior member of Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He is also an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor.

He was familiar with El Dorado because when he was in Coffeyville, he provided care for the athletes of the community college and knew of their rivalry with Butler Community College. He said when he was asked about joining the staff at SBAMH, he thought it would be a good fit.

His hobbies include soccer, basketball and handball. He also is an avid photographer and enjoys playing chess. He has two sons and a daughter, as well as two grandchildren.

Dr. Coles is located in SBA Medical Clinic West, Suite 105. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 316-321-8757.
