The first baby of 2017 born at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital didn’t arrive until Jan. 4.

Josh Gibson and Natasha Haper are the proud parents of the first baby, Les Paul Gibson, who was born at 5:26 p.m. Jan. 4, 2017. He weighed 5 1/2 pounds.

Les is the first child for Natasha and the second child for Josh.

On Jan., 4, they left home, which is in Howard, at about 5:30 in the morning, arriving at the hospital at 7 a.m. They said they were the only ones there that day and by the end of the day they had a new addition to their family.

“I cried,” she said of the first time she saw her son. “I was so happy.”

Natasha said she was concerned because he had some breathing problems and the nurses took him away, but Josh, having been through it before, said he knew everything was routine.

“Everything’s been good so far,” Josh added.

The couple found out they were having a boy when Natasha was about six months pregnant.

The name was Josh’s idea.

“I fought for the name,” he said.

Josh explained, “I was at work and she said she was having a baby and I said there was only one condition.”

That was the name Les Paul because Josh likes guitars.

At first, Natasha wasn’t a fan of the name, but she eventually agreed to it.

“I can’t wait to introduce him to my puppy and I can’t wait for him to se his room,” Natasha said, as she held her son. “I worked so hard on it.”

She said she is always cleaning, so the room was her “nesting” in preparation for the arrival of her son. His room has a theme of Nightmare Before Christmas and Dr. Seuss.

Natasha is a housekeeper and Josh works in construction. Josh also has a son, Ash, who is 14.

Les has a grandmother in Georgia who drove all the way here for his birth, as well as other grandparents and great-grandparents in the area and a lot of cousins.

“He is pretty perfect,” Natasha said.
