Celebration of Freedom essays and concert
Student Awards for essay winners in the local El Dorado Elks Lodge #1407 Essay contest were presented Monday night at the Spotlight on Youth Concert, a feature of the local Celebration of Freedom events.
The essays featured the thoughts of the young people on veterans and patriotism. This year’s theme was “Why?”
The winners were announced by Lodge representative Phil Wickwire, and certificates and money honors were presented by Kelly Herzet.
Before the awards were announced, Wickwire introduced the 2016 winner, Taylor Bessent, who, after winning the local and state competition, became the first young lady from Kansas to win the National Health Association Elks Essay Award.
Between concert numbers, presented by the El Dorado Middle School Bands, the top three winners, by age group, were announced as follows:
Division 1 winners were: 1st place-Amanda Brown, Flinthills Intermediate School; 2nd place-Jared Stopezynski, Flinthills Intermediate School; 3rd place-Hanna Sharp, Circle Oil Hill Elementary School.
Division II Winners were: 1st place William Gomez, El Dorado Middle School’2nd place-Alissa Henson, El Dorado Middle School; 3rd place, Marissa Holt, Circle Middle School.
The concert ended with the 7th and 8th grade band honoring all service men and women with the Marches of the Armed Forces.
Following the concert, the attendees were treated to an ice cream social by Intrust Bank.
