Finalists will make presentations Wednesday

The three artist teams who have been selected as finalists for the “Imagine Gateway” at the entrance of the Andover Public Library will be making their presentations at 7 p.m. Wednesday  in the Art Gallery and the public is invited to attend.
The public art project was conceived in response to a problem with the original tiles that covered the entrance to the building. The Board selected the theme “Imagine Gateway” to represent both the library and the spirit of creativity they hope to inspire in Andover residents.
The artists were chosen through an application process and are being paid an honorarium to take their initial concept to the next level.  Although the opportunity was promoted statewide, all of the finalists are rooted in Andover and Wichita.  They are:
Mika Holtzinger – Muralist; Instructor of Art Appreciation at Butler County Community College, partnering with Designer Palms for metal sculpture.
John Harrison, Tom McGuire and Lisa Rundstrom -  All of the team have Wichita State connections.  Lisa Rundstrom is an instructor of New Media Art and Director of WSU SHIFTSPACE Gallery; John Harrison is an engineer and musician who helped found Wichita’s first Makerspace; and Tom McGuire is an engineer and kinetic artist who has  been involved with several local technology movements.
Roger Placzek and Matthew Placzek of Placzek Studios – Matthew Placzek is a monumental sculpture artist, and his brother Roger, an Andover resident, is the installation engineer and project manager.
Andover Library Board President Martha Farrell is enthused about the variety of ideas showcased in the proposals.
“They have taken our input and come back with three very different works of art, with unique approaches,” Farrell said. “We’re excited to see how the public responds to the ideas.”
