It's the American in me, not the lifelong journalist, that makes me fervently wish for an opportunity  to ask a few questions of President Trump. I would even be willing to solemnly vow that I would never publicly disclose his responses — not that such a shameless man likely would care.

It would take more effort than I've yet given the matter to decide the order of the questions I would pose to the president, but I can list here a few of the subjects I would cover.

One of the issues sure to arise would be Trump's poor standing in the polls. All of the major polling organizations — that is, those  that rigidly observe the scientific rules of measuring public opinion — have reported for several months now that the president's approval rating is under water. To what does Trump attribute this consensus? Does he think the polls are fixed? Are the bad numbers a false creation of the “fake media”?

Why is Trump's ego so fragile? He seems to be pathologically unable to admit that he's ever been less than the undisputed winner of every contest he's ever entered. Without a shred of supporting evidence, he's claimed that election fraud is the only reason Hillary Clinton was shown to have garnered nearly 3 million more popular votes than  he received in the November election. He's claimed that the crowd at his inauguration was unprecedentedly large, despite strong photographic evidence to the contrary. To hear him tell it, he's always No. 1, no matter what the evidence shows.

Why did he persist for so long in his bogus claim that Barack Obama was foreign-born and thus ineligible to serve as president? The evidence that Obama was born in Hawaii was overwhelming, and arguments against it were most common among America's worst racists. Why did Trump find common bond with such repugnant specimens?

There are so many other questions I'd like to pose to the president, but my choices would depend on how much time I had for the interview.

What questions would you like to ask?
