  • Something to Talk About
Recently declassified documents from the National Security Archive detail just how close — how very, very close — a 1961 accident came to detonating two nuclear bombs near the town of Goldsboro. After a B-52 broke apart in the air, the bombs fell from the plane … and both were armed. Or, as phrased in a document summary, “The impact of the aircraft breakup initiated the fuzing sequence for both bombs.”
One bomb was kept safe by a safety measure, but it was pure luck the second one didn’t explode.
So, North Carolina, uh … sorry ‘bout that.
