After announcing the closing of Strickler’s Shoe Store last month, people have stopped by to purchase shoes and to say goodbye to owner and community friend Tom Knudson.
Saturday was the final day and Knudson received an unexpected gift from Augusta’s athletic groups, representing hundreds of kids and parents.
“We appreciate everything that you’ve done for all of us for so many years. We just wanted to give you a token of that appreciation,” said Jenny Urhmacher, representing the Augusta Boosters Club.
She and Traci Swartz presented him with a check in the amount of $700, $100 from each of the following groups: AHS Boosters, football cheerleading, baseball, softball, wrestling, soccer and basketball.
Knudson was obviously surprised, saying, “I didn’t think there was any way to catch me off guard. But I’m surprised and honored. I don’t deserve this.”
For more than 35 years, Strickler’s was the sign-up place for all of the local sports and Knudson provided shoes and other athletic items for generations of local youths.
Knudson’s presence downtown will be missed, but friends and customers wish him a happy retirement and more time for golfing and fishing.
