Conditions of the heart

A healthy heart is essential to life and a healthy heart is essential to spiritual life!
If the heart is not functioning as it should, then medical procedures are  needed to correct the problem. The same is true with spiritual life. Therefore, let us examine three conditions of the heart which frustrate one in becoming a Christian!
First, the heart which hears not. This heart is robbed of the time to examine the evidence of Christianity. The daily struggles of life keep this heart and mind so stressed that the truth is regarded as a beaten path.
Jesus said about this heart, “And those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.” (Luke 13: 12).
Second, the unthinking heart. This heart flows with the tide. If the tide flows in favor of religion, or if everybody is going that way, that’s the way of the  unthinkable heart.
When difficult times arise, this heart cannot and will not stand, because he has no convictions and his faith is liken to that of rocky foundations, which have no stability.
Jesus said of this heart, “And those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.” (Luke 8:13).
Third, Christianity is crowded out. This heart puts the world and the things of the world ahead of Christianity.  Christianity is an after-thought - leftovers!
Again, Jesus said, “And the seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.” (Luke 8: 14).
These three heart conditions need medical attention!
Next week we will address the cures to these heart conditions.
