  • Roy L. Alexander, 78, Towanda,  passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at the VA Hospital in Wichita.  
    The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22; celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug.23, 2014, both at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado. Cremation will follow the service.
    Roy was born on June 22, 1936 in Caddo, Okla., the son of J.B. and Lillian (Akins) Alexander.  He was united in marriage to Azalia M. Phalen in Hawthorne, Nev., in the First Presbyterian Church on June 23, 1957 after enlisting in the United States Marines on Aug. 31, 1954, serving during the Korean War.  Roy started working as an oilfield pumper in 1982, retiring in 2004.  He enjoyed working, fishing, hunting and bowling.
    Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Azalia; son, Richard (Rhonda) Alexander of El Dorado; grandchildren, Alicia Schulthess, Aaron Alexander, Alan (Nyamka) Alexander and Amanda Vail; nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Jackson of Arkansas City and Shirley Brown of Augusta.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and two nephews.
    A memorial in his memory has been established with Robert J Dole VAMC, which can be left with Carlson Funeral Home. Condolences for the family can be sent to www.carlsoncolonial.com.
