  • For the 12th consecutive season, the Butler football team is ranked in the preseason top 10 by the NJCAA.
This year, the Grizzlies crack the preseason poll at No. 6. That is the same spot in which the Grizzlies were ranked in the final poll of the 2013 season. Butler has been ranked in the preseason national poll each year since 1998. The last time Butler was ranked lower than 10th in the preseason was in 2002 when they were slotted 17th.
"Being ranked this high in the preseason poll is an honor, but at this point in the season it is simply a reflection of the longstanding tradition of winning at Butler," head coach Troy Morrell said. "We will have to prove we are worthy of that ranking with our performance on the field against some very fine competition."
The Grizzlies will face two of the top teams in the nation in the first three weeks of the season. After starting with a home game against Independence on Thursday, Aug. 28, Butler will play on the road at No. 2 Iowa Western on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Grizzlies then return home to face No. 11 Hutchinson on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Butler is the highest-ranked Kansas team. In addition to Hutchinson, Dodge City is ranked 17th.
Butler is coming off a 9-2 season in which it won its fourth-straight Jayhawk Conference title and its 14th in the past 16 seasons. The Grizzlies return four starters this year.
