  • Detour of I-135 planned

    • email print
  • A two mile section of the southbound lanes of I-135, located south of the US 50/K-15 interchange in Newton, are scheduled to close to facilitate repair work on the SE 24th Street bridge over I-135. The closure of this two mile section of I-135 will begin at about 8 p.m.  Aug. 15 and will reopen around 8 a.m. on  Aug. 16 and then will close again at 8 pm. Aug. 16  and will reopen around noon  Aug. 17.
A signed detour will route traffic from I-135 to US-50 to K-15 to South Kansas Avenue to SE 36th Street then back to I-135. Oversized loads will not be able to navigate the detour, so over length or over width trucks will need to use an alternate route during these closure time periods. Northbound I-135 traffic will be unaffected by this bridge work.
The contractor, Dondlinger & Sons Construction Co., will be setting new bridge beams and undertaking other repairs to the SE 24th Street bridge, which was struck by a semi-truck in May. Highway construction project locations and road condition information can be viewed at the http://511.ksdot.org website, or can also be accessed by telephone by dialing 511.
