  • A former Leavenworth High School football coach has been charged with stealing money from the Leavenworth School District, the county attorney said.
Kevin J. Kopecky, who coached at LHS for three years, is charged in Leavenworth County District Court with two counts of felony theft, Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said.
He made his first court appearance July 23. He's scheduled to return to court Aug. 20 for a preliminary hearing.
Kopecky began his stint as head football coach at LHS in 2010. He resigned in 2013 to take a job at Eudora High School.
The Lawrence Journal-World reported that he resigned from his coaching position in Eudora earlier this year.
The complaint filed in District Court alleges Kopecky stole $1,626 on Jan. 19, 2011, and an additional $1,262 on Jan. 12, 2012.
The complaint, which lists Kopecky's address as being in De Soto, was filed July 9.
Evidence will be presented during the preliminary hearing, and the judge will determine if the case should be bound over for a trial.
