July 22, 1934: Bank robber John Dillinger, listed by the FBI as “Public Enemy No. 1,” is gunned down by police and federal agents outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago, Illinois, where he had just seen “Manhattan Melodrama,” a gangster film. He died almost immediately.
