  • The USD 490 Board of Education  approved disbursement of the request for proposals for the purchase and development of 500 W.Central, the old middle school, during their meeting Monday evening.
The former purchase option was terminated with Cohen-Esrey after they were not able to secure funding to turn it into senior apartments.
Successful proposals have to address parking, landscaping and considerations the district would not make. Those that will maintain the auditorium will receive additional consideration, but they want to see consideration for costs.
“We want that space, regardless of what it is, to be an improvement or enhancement to the surrounding communities,” Superintendent Sue Givens said.
The target price is $250,000 based upon the most recent purchase offer, although a proposal may be lower than that.
“The purchase price is a key component,” Givens said. “We have to maximize taxpayer dollars.”
The request for proposals also made recommendations on evaluation and selection.
“This district is well served by community input on our facility task force,” Givens said. “I would recommend you take recommendations from a committee made up of no more than two board members and a selection of community members you feel have the expertise to give you good feedback.”
Key dates include releasing the RFPs and mail those to interested parties, as well as mailing them pretty broadly to other places, on Aug. 1. There will be a property open house on Aug. 15. Pre-submittal conference is Sept. 17 and all responses are due at noon on Nov. 7.
“The major principals, we only consider proposals that are supported by evidence of sustainability,” Givens said. “In five years we don’t want it setting empty and boarded up.”
