  • In July 2012, Dr. Roger Joyce of El Dorado was killed when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. Now his wife, Luci Joyce, is hoping to help raise awareness of bicycle riders.
She and Gary Smith are planning the Roger Joyce Memorial Bicycle Ride.
She said she was in State Farm one afternoon asking about the signage they have for bicycle safety and Smith was in there. From that, the idea of the ride was started.
"Mainly it's to increase awareness of bicycles on the roadways," she said.
All monies raised will be used to get signs, which are in the proccess of being approved by the state, to place in the city and county, as well as possibly state wide.
The ride will be held the first Sunday in August. Registration will be at 7:30 and the ride will begin at 8 a.m., departing from East Park in El Dorado. There will be 25-, 50- and 80-mile rides, with lunch at the Leon Senior Center provided by Oklahoma Boys BBQ. The cost of the ride is $30.
If someone wants to donate, but not ride, they can make a donation through youcaring.com and selected the Roger Joyce Memorial Bicycle Ride or by mailing a check payable to Joyce Memorial Bike Ride to Luci Joyce, P.O. Box 935, El Dorado, KS 67042.
