  • Augusta's Legion baseball team found out what can happen when mistakes start to snowball.
The Orioles were leading Andover Central 2-1 heading to the fifth of a well-played, closely contested opening game of their doubleheader Tuesday. That's when Augusta's defense fell apart. The Orioles committed three errors in a short span that allowed the Jaguars to blow open the game on way to a 5-2 win.
The Jaguars opened up the offense and took advantage of more Oriole struggles in game 2 for a 9-0 win to complete the sweep.
In the opener, the Orioles got off to a quick start on offense. Clay Wesbrooks was hit by pitch during the game's first at-bat. Two batters later, Collin Eldringhoff singled, then Dalton Eberhardt drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Central pitcher Dakota Rodd then threw a wild pitch and a passed ball to let two Oriole runners score before getting a strikeout to end the inning.
The Orioles missed opportunities to take control of the game after they set themselves up a couple other times. In the third inning, Eldringhoff and Jonny Clausing hit back-to-back singles, and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, but Central shortstop Cole Taylor caught a pop-up to end the threat.
Augusta loaded the bases again in the fourth, this time with no outs. But Rodd came through with some clutch pitches to get three straight strikeouts, two of them with Oriole batters looking.
Earlier, during the third inning, Rodd hit a two-out single, then scored after Grant Schoonover hit an RBI triple to close the gap to 2-1.
Other than that, though, Wesbrooks was in total control on the mound for the Orioles. He retired the side in the second with three straight strikeouts of his own. He retired the side in the fourth, as well.
He didn't get a lot of help in the fifth, though. Joe Davidson drew a walk, then Taylor reached first for the Jaguars. But after a throwing error to first, they advance to second and third with one out. Schoonover then blasted another triple, but the Orioles made a throwing error on the relay, allowing him to score an inside-the-park home run, which gave the Jaguars a 4-2 lead.
The Orioles' infield later had communication problems as three players watched an infield pop-up drop to the ground and allow another run to score.
Wesbrooks finished with seven strikeouts and allowed four walks, six hits and three earned runs. Rodd also had seven strikeouts and four walks for the Jaguars on the mound.
Notes: Despite hosting the game, Augusta was the visiting team. The games originally were scheduled to be played in Andover....Augusta and Central will compete with Winfield and Ark City at next week's Single-A Zone tournament in Augusta.
