When there is a state championship team, there are bound to be top players, and maybe a top coach. Augusta’s softball team, which won the Class 4A-Div. I state title last Friday, produced seven First Team All-AVCTL selections.

Oriole pitcher Megan Hayes earned First Team selections. Katy Nordman (third base), Casady Marlnee (catcher), Brooke Eberhardt (first base), Carley Phillips (outfield), Kylie Wesbrooks (outfield) and Abby Tipton (utility) all earned First Team selections, as well.

Morgan Kirk was named Second Team as a shortstop. She might’ve been First Team if not for Clearwater’s standout athlete Bryna Vogel, who was named the league MVP. Eberhardt also earned Second Team honors as a pitcher.

Earning Honorable Mention was pitcher Nicole Becker.

Second-year coach Shane Steinkamp earned his second straight Coach of the Year honor.

Nordman led the Orioles with a whopping .484 batting average. She hit two home runs and had 38 RBIs. At third base, she only made four errors and finished with a .951 fielding percentage.

With her explosive bat, Marlnee led the team with seven home runs and 39 RBIs. She finished with a .393 average and had a team-high 13 doubles. She also drew 10 walks. Behind the plate, Marlnee had just one error at the Orioles’ catcher and threw out three runners trying to steal.

Eberhardt finished with a .410 average, hit three home runs and had 31 RBIs. She drew 11 walks. On the mound, Eberhardt had a 7-2 record and finished with a 2.28 ERA. She threw 26 strikeouts and allowed 18 walks and 37 hits through 46 innings pitched.

Hayes had a 9-2 record, including two wins during the state tournament. She finished with a 2.63 ERA. In 72 innings, Hayes allowed 65 hits while getting 47 strikeouts and giving up 16 walks.

Wesbrooks led the Orioles with 48 hits from her lead-off spot. She had two home runs, a team-high three triples and 17 RBIs. She had a .456 average and drew 12 walks. She had zero errors as the Orioles’ rightfielder.

Phillips, a sophomore and the youngest Oriole All-Leaguer, finished with a .348 average. She drove in 16 runs and had one home run. In center field, Phillips had an .878 fielding percentage.

Tipton had a .375 average with 18 RBIs. In the field, Tipton had a .912 percentage.

Kirk tied for third on the team with a .410 average. She had one home run (in the state championship game), 30 RBIs and drew 13 walks. She had 13 stolen bases. In the field, Kirk had a .929 fielding percentage at the ever-tough shortstop position.

Becker’s Honorable Mention came as a pitcher. She had a sneaky good 2.33 ERA and won all five of her starts. She allowed just 28 hits and eight walks to go along with 26 strikeouts through 30 innings pitched.
