  • First preliminary awards made to Medicine Lodge native and a Missourian

  • The Miss Kansas Pageant produced its first winners in a field of 31 contestants at Thursday’s preliminary competition at the Lesh Sports Arena at Pratt Community College.
    Morgan Christensen, a 22-year-old graduate of the University of Kansas, captured the swimsuit award. She is the daughter of Bob and Cindy Christensen, Medicine Lodge. She competed as Miss Lawrence. The swimsuit competition counts for 15 percent in selecting the semi-finalists who will compete Saturday night.
    Miss Greater Wichita Amanda Sasek earned the talent award for a vocal selection, “Out Here On My Own” from the movie “Fame.” Talent is weighted at 35 percent. Sasek, 23, is from Moberly, Mo., and is in graduate school at the University of Kansas, with the goal of attaining a Master of Arts or PhD degree in political science and teaching at the university level. Her parents are Jon and Michelle Brooks.
    The second night of competition begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
