  • The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Helen Bristow, 71, who died on Tuesday, June 03, 2014 at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kan.
    Helen Frances Bristow was born on April 5, 1943 in Wichita, Kan., one of seven children of Joseph L. and Helen Zeugin Bristow. She graduated from Sacred Heart Grade School and Immaculata High School, Leavenworth, Kan. She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on August 30, 1961, and as Sister Joseph Ellen Bristow made her profession of vows on August 10, 1969. She later returned to the use of her baptismal name.
    After profession, Sister Helen taught in grade and high schools in the Kansas City Area. She was also a librarian. For more than 30 years she was a pastoral associate in several Kansas City, Missouri churches. She then went on to serve as a patient advocate and social service worker in Kansas City, Kan. Sister Helen received a B.A. in Religious Education from Avila, Kansas City, Mo. and a MA in counseling from UMKC, Kansas City, Mo.
    Sister Helen was preceded in death by her father, Joseph L. Bristow and cousins, Sisters Ellenita and Eulalia Uhlrich, of the SCL Community.
    Survivors include her mother, Helen Zeugin Bristow; sister and brothers and their families, Patricia Moulden, Richard Bristow, Bernard Bristow, Edward Bristow, Robert Bristow, all of Leavenworth, Kan.; brother John Bristow of West Allis, Wis.; aunt Sister Jeanne Marie Zeugin and cousin, Sister Marianna Bauder of the SCL Community; many cousins,  nieces,  nephews, friends and her SCL Community.  
    A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2014 in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth where friends may call after 4 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. R. L. Leintz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. 4th St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
