This year’s sessions will be held from June 10 through 27 and July 8 through 25
The Walnut Valley Sailing Club/STEP program is beginning its 10th year teaching youth and adults to sail through two different sessions.
Not only do they teach the youth how to sail, but also emphasize confidence building, individual leadership and teamwork.
This year’s sessions will be held from June 10 through 27 and July 8 through 25. Both sessions are three days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays. The youth sessions, for ages 8 to 17, are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the adult sessions, 18 or older or 15 to 17 if accompanied by an adult, are from 6 to 9 p.m.
Those participating must have an interest in learning to sail and swim 25 yards without a lifejacket. Participants are required to provide their own life jacket, sunscreen, hat and water shoes.
There will be three levels of instruction: beginners, intermediate and advanced. Safety, weather, self-rescuing skills, basic rules of the road and nomenclature also are covered.
Their fleet includes: Prams, Sabots, Optimists, Capri 14.2’s, Sunfish, Lasers, Sonar and Catalina 22 & 25s.
Some of the youth graduates qualify to return and become instructors in the program.
The cost for youth is a $25 non-refundable registration fee, plus a $45 class fee for Walnut Valley Sailing Club (WVSC) members, or a $25 non-refundable registration fee, plus a $70 class fee for non-members. The fee includes a USSA “Start Sailing Right” instruction manual, use of a boat for the summer, t-shirt and awards. For youth 8 to 17 it also includes a Youth Provisional Membership to the Walnut Valley Sailing Club, which begins at the beginning of class and continues for the remainder of the year. Class size is 20 students per session for youth and 10 for adults.
Adult fees are a $25 non-refundable registration fee and $155 class fee for WVSC members or a $25 non-refundable registration fee and $255 class fee for non-members. An accompanying spouse or family member is $180. For more information, call Tedd Blankenship at 316-775-1064 or visit www.wvsailing.com.
