  • Over her past 38 years of teaching first through third grades and special education, Judy Terick has collected a fantastic bank of memories to last a lifetime.
A current first grade student, Travis Casteel, summed up her teaching perfectly when he wrote for her, “I love the first day of school! I love every day of school! The hugs are the best!”
Travis and hundreds of other students have impacted Terick’s life as much as she has changed theirs. For Terick, sharing her love of reading with each student is a passion. Her favorite accomplishment each year is when the students make the leap from “learning how to read” to “reading to learn.”
Retirement plans for Terick and her husband, Pat, include an Alaskan cruise and other traveling as well as spending time with the extended family and grandchildren.
Terick’s formal education began at Emporia State University followed by a master’s of education from Friends University, with all 38 years of teaching serving Augusta’s children.
The first 13 years of teaching were in special education at Robinson School. For the next 25 years, Terick has taught at Garfield School a combination first and second grade class, Title One Reading Recovery, and the remainder in first grade.
“My dad once wrote a poem about his seven daughters,” she said. “In it he said:
    “‘Judy, with calmness your feature,
‘We knew from the start that you would be a great teacher.’”
“I have proven him right for 38 years... Years filled with memories, blessings, and even a few tears!”
Garfield Elementary Principal Kim Clark stated, “The students, staff, parents and principal will miss Judy’s warm smile, hugs, high fives and handshakes, the caring and compassion she shows to every individual. All who know Judy are blessed!”
