  • Oxford started fast in Monday's doubleheader against Flinthills' baseball team by scoring three runs in the first inning of the opener.
That would be the only lead the Mustangs would allow to Oxford. Flint Hills bounced back with three runs of its own in the second inning and kept the offense rolling on way to an 11-3 victory. The Mustangs used an eight-run fourth inning to seal an already dominant performance in game 2 for a 12-2 victory.
With the sweep, the Mustangs improved their record to 13-3 on the season with one final doubleheader to close the regular season next week.
In the opener, Brenton Nelson and Jason Hefton both were 2-for-4 to lead the Flinthills offense. Hefton had three RBIs. Nelson and Colton Allemand had one double apiece. Clay Oates had a two-RBI single and Zach Sangals had an RBI single of his own.
Montgomery Moore pitched 6 innings and allowed just one earned run and six hits to go with his five strikeouts. He did allow five walks. Allemand closed the game in the seventh with two strikeouts and the final out.
In game 2, Flinthills chipped away with one run in the first and second innings and two in the third for a 4-0 lead. But it was the Mustangs' fourth inning, when they put up eight runs, that sealed the run-rule win after five innings.
Nelson and Jayden Simmons both had thre hits apiece to lead the Mustangs' offense. Hefton had a two-RBI double, Ryan Batson had two hits and three RBIs and Sangals had a two-RBI single for Flinthills, as well.
It didn't help Oxford's case when it committed six errors. Flinthills had zero errors.
From the mound, Hefton allowed just three hits and one earned run to pick up the win. Allemand pitched 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts to close out to game.
