  • The death of an inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth is being investigated as an apparent homicide, a prison spokesman said.
Jeremy Nemerov, 48, died at 8:31 p.m. Monday at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He was taken to the hospital April 24 after he was found unresponsive in his housing unit at the federal prison.
This was a day after he arrived at the U.S. Penitentiary, said Treavor Kroger, public information officer for the prison.
No details have been released regarding what caused Nemerov to be unresponsive.
Kroger said Tuesday that an autopsy had not yet been performed.
"The investigation is still ongoing," he said.
The FBI is handling the homicide investigation.
Nemerov received a 78-month sentence in the federal Eastern District of Missouri for conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
His projected release date was Dec. 13, 2018, with credit for good conduct.
