  • A two-vehicle accident on K-61 highway claimed the lives of a Halstead couple Friday Morning. Killed in the accident were Ronald Werner, 75 and Kathleen Werner, 73 both of Halstead.
The accident happened around 10 a.m. when Edio Estrada, 20 of Rio Grande City, Texas was northbound on K-61 about five miles north of Pratt in a 2000 Chevrolet Avalanche and for unknown reasons crossed the center line and struck the right front side of the southbound Werner vehicle, a 2004 Ford Taurus, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash web site.
The Avalanche flipped over onto its top, slid northbound and came to rest facing south in the southbound lane. The Werner vehicle stopped facing east along the northbound shoulder.
The Werners were killed in the accident. Both were wearing seatbelts.
Pratt County EMS transported Estrada to Pratt Regional Medical Center for a possible injury. He was not wearing a seatbelt. His condition is unavailable at this time.
