Ark City’s baseball team was able to put together a big inning in both of its games against the Andover Trojans during Tuesday night’s doubleheader.
The Trojans weren’t able to overcome that in the first game, but rallied to win the nightcap. Ark City scored five runs in the fourth inning to propel a 7-3 win in the opener. The Bulldogs scored six runs in the third inning of game 2, but Andover chipped away for a 12-9 comeback win to get the split.
In game 1, the Bulldogs already had a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Trojans came back with two of their own in the third before Ark City’s big fourth inning. Andover managed just one run the next three innings.
The Trojans’ four errors didn’t help their cause. Andover actually outhit Ark City 10-7.
Miles Starks and Josh Norlin both were 2-for-4 to lead the Trojans’ offense. Bryant Klusener and Brandon Fullington both had an RBI base hit.
Jack Maki threw 3 1/3 innings on the mound. Ark City scored seven runs, but only three were earned. Maki had two strikeouts to go along with three walks and five hits. Starks came in relief and gave up just two hits and no runs in 2 2/3 innings. He had one strikeout.
In game 2, Andover got off to a quick start by putting up two runs in the first inning. Ark City scored one in the bottom half, but the Trojans added one in the top of the second for a 3-1 lead.
That’s when Ark City put together its big, six-run third inning to take a 7-3 lead. This time, though, the Trojans responded. They rallied for four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game 7-7. The Bulldogs added one in the bottom half of the fourth, but Andover took control with three runs in the fifth for a 10-8 lead. Andover added one in the sixth and the seventh innings and held off the Bulldogs for the win.
Both teams had five errors. Ark City had 10 hits to Andover’s nine. The Trojans scored five unearned runs to Ark City’s three.
Klusener and Zach Stater both were 2-for-5 at the plate to lead the Trojans. Klusener had four RBIs, Starks added two RBIs, and Norlin, Cooper Nichols and Fullington all added an RBI base hit for the Trojans.
Andover next plays rival Andover Central Friday.
