There was so much wind Monday that Augusta's varsity softball team had to switch fields.
The varsity team overcame the windy conditions enough to sweep the visiting Clearwater Indians by scores of 8-4 and 7-4.
The Orioles raced out to an 8-0 lead through just three innings of the opener, but the Indians scored three runs to prevent the shutout.
Augusta had a chance to get a run-rule win in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs. Clearwater turned a 1-2-5 double play from home to third, then got a pop-up to end the inning. The Indians scored one more run, but the Orioles put a stop to their run in the seventh to seal the win.
Katy Nordman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the Orioles. Lauren Fernz was 2-for-3 and a run as she came up with some clutch hits. Casady Marlnee had a two-RBI single. Brooke Eberhardt was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Morgan Kirk had a sacrifice RBI.
Eberhardt picked up the win on the mound, scattering a few hits and a couple runs; the Indians also scored a couple unearned runs off two Oriole errors.
In game 2, the Orioles picked up where they left off. They got off to a fast start by scoring three runs in the first inning. Kylie Wesbrooks drew a walk and Kirk doubled to get runners on second and third. Eberhardt later hit a two-out, two-RBI single to get the Orioles on the scoreboard. Abby Tipton then hit an RBI single before a strikeout ended the inning.
Carley Phillips hit a leadoff home run in the second inning for a 4-1 lead.
Clearwater's Bryna Vogel had crushed a solo home run of her own to get the Indians on the scoreboard. But for the most part, Augusta pitcher Megan Hayes was able to keep the Indians under control most of the game. She scattered seven hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts and just one walk.
Kirk, Nordman, Tipton and Eberhardt all had two hits apiece for the Orioles, who finished with three doubles.
Augusta is off Thursday and returns to action next Monday at Andale.
