  • Judith Lea Zook Rickey, 67, of Leavenworth, Kan., died April 10, 2014 at her home surrounded by her dogs and friends after a courageous fight with cancer.
Judy was born July 7, 1946 in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Harold O’Dean and Mary Ann Whitacre Zook. She graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, KS in 1964.  Judy received a Bachelor’s of Arts from the University of Kansas in 1970. She worked at Mobil Oil Credit Corporation. Her true passion in life was her love for animals especially her dogs. Judy found great joy in showing and breeding dogs, especially her Old English Sheepdogs and Clumber Spaniels. Judy’s love for her dogs was unconditional and her dogs were her children. Her dogs always showed beautifully and she had many champions. Judy was a wealth of knowledge in the different types of breeds she had, and offered tremendous guidance to the families that adopted her dogs thus developing many wonderful friendships over the years. She also took great pride in horticulture, and had the ability to grow the most exquisite plants and lawn. Judy belonged to several clubs and organizations over the years including the Clumber Spaniel Club of America, Old English Sheepdog Club of America, and the Leavenworth Kennel Club. She held numerous officer positions within these clubs.
Judy is survived by her friends and five Clumber Spaniels of the home; Chewy, Anya, Fancy, Winnie, and Radar. She was predeceased by her parents and many beloved dogs.
A memorial graveside service will be held to honor Judy’s amazing life on Saturday May 3, 2014 at 11 am at Hubbel Hill Cemetery (Tonganoxie Cemetery) in Tonganoxie, Kan. with a reception to follow at Basehor United Methodist Church in Basehor, Kan. Per Judy’s wishes, she has requested that her friends wear jeans and a favorite dog shirt to her service.
