  • When Andover and Andover Central get together in any sport, you can expect fireworks.
Thursday night’s soccer match was no exception.
The first half was uneventful. The second half was anything but uneventful. But the game wasn’t decided in the first or second half.
A controversial foul call about halfway through the first overtime period allowed Ana Dilkes to boot home the game-winning penalty kick and give the Lady Trojans a 3-2 win.
No one scored in the first half. Andover enjoyed an advantage with the win but both squads played cautious soccer and neither seemed willing to push too many people forward.
But just over a minute after intermission, freshman Kassidy Wackerly was fouled around midfield. Goalkeeper Caitlin Orgera took the free kick and when it bounced past the Lady Trojan defense, Jenna Peckham controlled the ball and scored with a strong left-footed shot.
Central threatened again when a throw-in deep in Andover’s end came from Masen Stamp to Maddison Zimmer whose chip shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Andover’s best chance early in the second half came on a 30-yard shot by Ana Dilkes that sailed just wide of her target.
With just under 20 minutes to go in the game, Andover’s defense failed to clear a ball and Zimmer controlled it and took an angled shot past the keeper into the back of the net for a 2-0 Lady Jaguars lead with 19:50 to play.
It appeared Central was in control but Andover’s best scoring play the past couple of years has been a corner kick off the foot of Abby Andoverson. With 17:16 left in regulation, Anderson curled a shot into the box and Katie Walker headed it past Orgera for the goal to cut the lead in half.
Just two minutes later, another Central foul gave Dilkes a free kick from 40 yards out. Her shot on goal caught Orgera in between bounces and Anderson opportunistically headed the rebound home for a 2-2 tie with 15:50 to go.
Anderson had another point blank shot later in the game but Orgera made a diving save to keep the game tied.
The teams traded corner kicks but neither could get the game-winning goal. With just 10 seconds left, Stamp made another long throw in into the box when Kenzie Penny was bumped down going for the ball. Penny stayed down injured after the final whistle blew with no call against Andover.
But Central wasn’t as fortunate when an Andover player was taken down from behind in the box during extra time. Wackerly appeared to bring Makayla Nudo down in the box and Nudo was granted the foul.
