  • El Dorado's track team had a strong first meet last week in Winfield.
The girls team took third place with 81 points, just five points behind second-place Derby. Newton won the team title with 101.5 points. The boys team scored 60 team points to take fifth place out of eight teams.
"We had a little better weather at Winfield than we had on Tuesday, and our athletes took advantage of it with several more personal records. The competition was good and we took advantage of it," coach Gary Melcher said.
He added that, on the girls side ,Destiny Smith ran well in the 100-meter and had a very good effort in the long jump. Justice Rice and Sally Rowell continued to get better in the shot put. Kayln Beel is improving in the triple jump as she broke the 30-foot barrier. Jolie and Sidney Howland continued to display their versatility, competing well in the 200 through the 3200 races, and Lakyn Anders had a very good meet coming back from knee surgery.
On the boys side, Coley McCarthy had a strong effort in the long jump, showing signs of being able to compete at the varsity level. In the jumps, Garrett Howland in the pole vault, Alec Hildreth in the triple jump and Landon Cuskelly in the high jump all had impressive performances. Jacob Anders and Jacob Harding performed well in their middle distance events.
El Dorado track returns to action Friday at the Marion Invitational.
