She has been cremated and a memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Augusta.
Joanne was born in Ft. Morgan, Colo. on July 17, 1927, to the late Frances (King) and Jerome  Travis. She attended public schools in Fort Morgan and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1950.  In 1951 she went to Hawaii with some of her sorority sisters (Alpha Delta Pi) where she found employment with the Insurance Rating Bureau.  In 1952 she met George Van, a Navy man, and they were married April 25, 1953. For the next eight years they lived wherever the Navy sent them until leaving active service in 1961 and settling in the San Francisco Bay area.  In 1993 they moved to Lusby, Md., where they enjoyed the activities with George's Naval academy classmates - Navy football games, etc.  In 2005 they moved to Augusta to be near their son, Ed. Joanne was a terrific homemaker, a fantastic wife and a perfect mother.  She had a marvelous sense of humor and she and George had nearly 61 years of laughs together.
She leaves her husband, grateful for those wonderful years, and two sons, George (Marlene) of Pacific, Calif. and Ed of Augusta, and her sister, Mary Hansen of Augusta.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Jerry and Thomas Travis.
She will be inurned at the Naval Academy Columbarium in Annapolis, Md. at a date to be determined and will some day be joined there by her loving husband.
