The Flinthills baseball team piled up the hits in game 1 of Monday's road doubleheader at West Elk.
In game 2, the Mustangs had to score late, then hold off West Elk in the late innings, but both games resulted in wins. Flint Hills won game 1 18-6, then finished the night with a 7-6 win.
In the opener, Flint Hills scored early and often. After trailing 2-0 in the first, the Mustangs scored two in the second and four in the third to lead 6-3. The Mustangs scored four more in the fifth and held West Elk scoreless the rest of the way.
Jayden Simmons was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Mustangs. Jason Hefton added two hits and two RBIs, and Clay Oates also had two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Flint Hills tallied five doubles and three triples in the game.
On the mound for Flint Hills, Montgomery Moore gave up five hits and five earned runs in three 2 1/3 innings. He had six strikeouts and three walks. Colton Allemand came in relief and shut down West Elk. He allowed just one hit and struck out seven with one walk and no runs through 3 2/3 innings.
In the nightcap, West Elk had built a 4-1 lead after three innings, but Flint Hills came alive with five runs in the fifth. West Elk added one run in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Flint Hills held on for the narrow win.
Moore pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and gave up just one hit while striking out four and walking just two. Allemand pitched 2 2/3 innings. He allowed no earned runs and walked just one. He struck out five batters.
Moore had two of Flint Hills' five hits. The Mustangs took advantage of eight walks issued by West Elk pitchers.
