Since 2006, Leah Coley, of El Dorado, has been participating in the Walk MS. She will again be walking in support of MS on April 26 in Wichita.
"My step-daughter has MS," she said. "We moved here to take care of her 3 1/2 years ago."
The walk raises funds to make a difference in people's lives who have multiple sclerosis. The MS Society will use these funds to not only support research for a cure for the future but also provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today.
The Mid-America Chapter of the National MS Society works to improve the quality of life for people in 253 counties in Kansas, western Missouri and Nebraska and raise funds for critical MS research. They also encourage the Butler County MS Support Group, which meets at 7 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital cafeteria. The meetings are opened for anyone diagnosed with MS as well as friends or caregivers of someone with MS.
"I walk for the members of the support group, my stepdaughter and another person who are residents of a local nursing home because of MS," she said. "They all inspire me as they make their way through life with some very big challenges."
Today there is no cure for MS and Coley said one will not come in time for her stepdaughter, Susan, and the others, but they are hopeful it will be a possibility, if needed, for their children, grandchildren and many others at risk.
There is no cure today and a diagnosis usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 50.
