Getting a new entrance

Walz Harman Huffman will be the general contractor for the west entrance to the Rose Hill High School football stadium.

The Kechi construction company came in with the lowest of five bids, at $908,000. The bid was approved at a special board meeting March 31.

The new west entrance will feature a ticket booth, accessible restrooms, storage area and covered plaza.

The project will also address improving drainage on that side of the stadium with the installation of a larger culvert, Superintendent Randal Chickadonz said. Heavy rains result in standing water covering part of the track encircling the football field, and occasionally water pools on the turf, he said.

The project is to be done within 165 days, which puts completion about the second week of September, Chickadonz said. He told the board football practices wouldn’t be affected because the team can use other practice fields. Some track and field practice may be disrupted, but student-athletes will be bused to other facilities – a nearby school district or Wichita State University – if necessary, he said.

The status of the football field turf remains unsettled, Chickadonz said Tuesday. A defective drainage system allows soft spots on the field, and the district is attempting to determine the entity responsible for labor costs associated with the repair.

“Arbitration was to begin March 26, but it was placed in recess, so we’re on hold,” he said.
