  • Augusta senior wrestler Colton Clayborn finished his Oriole career with a state medal. And he will be continuing his wrestling career at the collegiate level next year.
Clayborn earned one last honor with the Orioles Monday night, and it might have been his biggest honor yet. Clayborn is the recipient of the Gene Nusz Memorial Wrestling Scholarship, which is awarded to one of the Orioles' wrestlers every year to one who wants to go to college.
Clayborn was a part of the wrestling program since he was 7 years old. He also played football from ages 7 to 15. He was a member of the Augusta Deparment of Safety Junior figrefighters for several years and plans to major in Fire Science to obtain his paramedic certification.
Clayborn finished with a 99-49 career record and placed top three in six tournaments this season, including a regional championship.
Clayborn was one of several Orioles who also earned the team's Orange Crush award, a grueling task which requires wrestling for 20 straight minutes against his teammates. Other Orange Crush winners were Jake Goldenstein, Connor Spellman, Nathan Moore, Rob Winzer and Cody Thompson.
Finally, coach Brandon Terry gave out the Iron Man award, which is earned by missing none or just one of each of the team's morning runs and practices each. The Orioles' Iron Man winners were Clayborn, Darrien Keyser, Thompson, Wright Bosley, Spellman, Ian O'Laughlin and Goldenstein.
