  • If Augusta’s baseball team gets pitching like this all season, it will be tough to beat.
Garrett Hutson and Mason Hiser both pitched gems Thursday afternoon against Mulvane in the season opener. They gave up just one earned run apiece and struck out a combined 17 batters. Ian Rogers pitched two shutout innings for a save, and Preston Bevan had a strikeout and retired the side in one inning of work.
But the Orioles also showed first-game rust in other phases during the doubleheader they’ll have to shake off, as well. The final result was a split of the two games.
“We just weren’t very good tonight. Looked like opening night,” coach Jeff Jefferson said. “And they know it. Defensively, we were bad. Luckily we strung together enough runs in that first game to get the win with Hutson on the hill. Our pitchers tonight threw great, from starters to relievers.”
Hutson threw 10 strikeouts and gave up just three hits and two walks through five innings to lead Augusta to a 4-2 win in game 1. Mulvane was able to shut out the Orioles for a narrow 1-0 victory in the nightcap.
“Location definitely [worked] tonight,” Hutson said. “Mixing it up inside and outside. I didn’t throw an off-speed pitch until the second time around.”
In the nightcap, Hiser only one hit through five innings as he was dealing. He threw seven strikeouts. But in the sixth inning, Mulvane was able to get a leadoff double and scratch a runner across home plate for a 1-0 lead.
Cody Wesbrooks led off the Orioles’ sixth with a walk, but Augusta struck out the next three at-bats.
In the seventh, Augusta got a leadoff walk from Bevan, but he got picked off on a baserunning error. Connor Hurst managed a two-out infield single, but Mulvane got the final out to end the threat.
Hurst led the Orioles with three hits on the day, all singles. Kade Koltiska, Hiser and Hutson both added two singles, and Michael Albright had a double and a run for the Orioles. Augusta drew five walks in the two games.
The Orioles had four errors in the two games.
