Kids attending the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce Women’s Fair will have the opportunity to meet Fred the Preparedness Dog.

The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5 at the Hubbard Welcome Center.

Fred will be at the fair as part of the booth set up by the Butler County Animal Response Team.

Janell Jessup, with the Animal Response Team said they were lucky to have Michael McNulty, director of Homeland Security Operations for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, be able to attend the event. He goes all over the state educating children on how to prepare for disasters.

“He and Fred go around and talk to kids,” Jessup explained. “Fred has his own little emergency pack he wears.”

McNulty talks to kids about how to be prepared in a disaster.

“Fred has a big impact on kids,” she said. “He has his own Facebook and Twitter.”

In addition to Fred, the Animal Response Team will have information there on disaster preparedness for pets and their families. They also are working to get a representative from the K-9 Search and Rescue Team.

She said this is a good time with the storm season approaching.

They currently have 13 qualified responders and several other members working on their requirements to become responders. Team members are attending an animal handling class presented by the southcentral region of the Kansas State Animal Response Team on March 22 in Hutchinson.

“We have several other events planned for later in the year, including another trailer fundraiser and a dog wash later this summer,” Jessup said.
