HUTCHINSON — After seeing the higher seeds upset in the first two games of the day, the Hesston Swather girls were determined to avoid the upset bug, jumping to a 20-3 lead en route to a 58-34 win over Douglass Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state basketball tournament at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hesston, 23-1, plays at 6:30 p.m. today against either Cimarron or Council Grove.

"We did a really good job of getting the ball pushed down the floor," Hesston coach Matt Richardson said. "We got some easy transition baskets when they tried to force the ball inside. We got things to go our way early."

In the first two games of the day, the higher seeded teams were both upset, including top-seed Riley County to eighth-seeded Lyons 57-49.

"There are all kinds of worries," Matt Richardson said. "The Lyons game was not surprising. That's a team in our league."

Cami Richardson and Kelsey Unruh scored 15 points each for the Swathers. Caylee Richardson added 14 points and nine rebounds. Hesston held a 30-13 advantage in total rebounds.

Douglass ends the season 18-6. Klair Gibson led the Bulldogs with 11 points.

"It was our first time here," Douglass coach Jason Wilson said. "There were some jitters. We knew they were going to be aggressive on the help-side, sagging man. We had to eliminate turnovers. We have away the ball way too much in the first quarter. Once we settled down, we played a lot better in the second quarter. With a 17-point hole, it was tough to get back in the ballgame. Matt Richardson does a really good job. When their top three players score 44 points, that's tough to beat. We tried to make them shoot from the outside, and they kicked our tails with the offensive rebounds."

Douglass turned the ball over 22 times. Hesston outscored the Bulldogs 25-4 in points off of turnovers. Hesston also held a 12-4 advantage in second-half points.

Four Douglass turnovers in the first 3:05 of play helped lead Hesston to a 9-0 lead. Douglass took a time out, but the Swathers added two more points to the run. Cashlyn Munroe broke the run with one of two free throws with 3:18 left in the half. Sara Dressler scored the Bulldogs' first field goal with 1:37 remaining in the quarter.

Hesston led 20-3 at the end of the period.

Hesston slowed the tempo a little in the second quarter. Douglass didn't get a shot from the field for the first four minutes, but went two of three from the line. Sarah Hajdukovick hit Douglass' first shot of the period, a layup with 3:58 remaining. Hesston led 29-11 at the half.

"I wanted us to have legs tomorrow night," Matt Richardson said. "We got a little passive in the second quarter, but that's on me. We had a few too many turnovers, but for the most part, we took pretty good care of the ball."

Hesston put things away with a 9-1 run to open the second half. Hajdukovick hit a layup with four minutes left in the period for Douglass' first field goal of the quarter. Hesston led 45-20 at the end of the period.

The Swathers led by as many as 28 early in the fourth quarter. Douglass pulled back to within as many as 21 late.

The Swathers now get a 24-hour turnaround before their semifinal match-up.

"We're going to have to defend the perimeter a little better than we did today," Matt Richardson said. "Both those teams can shoot the ball well from the outside."

Douglass loses five seniors, but just two starters. Four of the Bulldogs' top six scorers are expected to return next year.

"We're really young," Wilson said. "We return a lot. Hopefully, these girls will retain that fire. They know what's it's like to be here. Hopefully, they won't be satisfied and will want to come back here next year."
