Augusta’s powerlifting team had two Orioles place at the Class 4A state meet recently.
Alexis Baker, who is only a freshman, earned a medal for taking second place in bench in the 140-pound weight class. Baker took fifth place overall at State.
Baker’s medal at State a strong freshman campaign. At her first meet, she placed ninth at the Royal Valley meet at 132, but improved in several meets since. She took second place overall at the Emporia Invitational in the 136-pound class, then placed second at Augusta’s home meet at 140. She also placed fourth at the Clay Center meet at 140.
Greg Slaton, a senior for the Orioles who was coming off an ACL injury last year, earned a sixth-place overall medal out of 29 competitors in the 220-pound weight class. Earning a state medal was a strong to cap just his second season with the team. Earlier this year, he took fourth place at both Royal Valley and Emporia, then took third place at the Augusta meet, where he won the individual title in squat (405 pounds).
