Collegiate had five players in double figures and 10 players scored en route to an 86-71 win over Douglass in the sub-state finals Saturday night.

Before the game starts, Wichita Collegiate has advantages over the 3A teams it competes with in the playoffs.

A deep bench with the ability to make wholesale, five-man substitutions at will is a luxury that would be the envy of any small-school team. But when that advantage was multiplied by foul trouble, it created a hill too steep for Douglass to climb.

Collegiate had five players in double figures and 10 players scored en route to an 86-71 win over Douglass in the sub-state finals Saturday night. The Bulldogs had their hands tied by foul trouble. Senior point guard Chase Banister was tagged with his third foul less than seven minutes into the first quarter. When he returned for the second quarter, a second offensive foul put him back on the bench for the remainder of the half.

The score was 14-12 WCS when he left the game. With Banister on the bench, Drew Chadic has to help run the offense. But he picked up his third foul in the second quarter and that left Cody Holthaus to carry even more of the load.

Holthaus put the Bulldogs on his back and scored 33 points including a trio of three pointers and a 12-of-14 performance at the free throw line.

Freshman Spencer Nethercot nailed a three pointer at the buzzer to pull Douglass back within 7 points at the half with the Spartans leading 40-33. There were 28 combined fouls called in the first half. But the 15 called on Douglass were far more damaging than the 13 Collegiate was whistled for.

Chadic picked up his fourth foul on another offensive foul call early in the third period. He hit a three pointer on the next possession before he could be pulled from the game. After Chadic’s three, Holthaus went to work again scoring on a layup, a three pointer and a couple of free throws to cut the Spartan lead to 48-42. Banister returned to the game and scored to narrow the lead to 48-44.

But the WCS depth wore down the Bulldogs. The lead grew to 58-46 and 64-52 after three periods.

But a three-point barrage by the Spartans extended the lead to 71-58 and then 77-62 to put the game out of reach. Rip Fraley and Chase Banos both fouled out for Douglass.

Holthaus led all scorers with 33 points. Even limited by foul trouble, Banister scored 13 and Chadic added 11.

Fraley scored nine, Nethercot finished with three and John Gardner rounded out the scoring with two.

The Bulldogs finished the year with a 16-6 record. Collegiate also has a 16-6 record as they head to the 3A State Tournament this week.
