  • Representatives from the townships in Butler County gathered in El Dorado Thursday for the annual Butler County Township meeting.
“The county engineer is required once a year to hold a meeting once a year with all the township officials to discuss roads and drainage matters,” said Darryl Lutz, public works director/county engineer. “The practical need is townships really do not have a forum to share or exchange information that they need or could use to perform their functions as township officials. A little over 20 years ago I greatly expanded this meeting to include a lot of additional topics to just road and drainage issues. Really it’s just about getting information to the townships that will help them perform their jobs better.”
They heard from a number of speakers during the day-long event at the Civic Center.
Some of the topics covered included the township Web page, township use of the county radio system, township responsibilities and form completion for the IRS, open meetings and open records information and road maintenance basics and aggregate materials. There also was a question and answer time with Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet.
After a break for lunch, they heard from County Clerk Don Engels, heard a township Excel spreadsheet overview, learned about noxious weed control along township roads, head about the sign assessment systems, discussed utility and right-of-way issues and township policies, and heard about the county culvert replacement program.
They had 25 of the 29 townships in attendance this year.
