Old 54 Outdoor Market opens on May 3
Plans are underway for an Old 54 Outdoor Market on May 3, with one change this year.
“We decided this year we were going to fund raise for an organization and we chose to go with the Sunlight Children’s Advocacy and Rights Foundation,” said Lacy Firestine, who is organizing the event along with her mother, Paula Schild. “We would love to do something to help her (Suzi Thien, SCARF director) raise awareness about child abuse, but also help her raise money for the children’s home that is going in in Butler County.
“One of the reasons why we picked SCARF is I was raised in foster care,” Schild continued. “My mom and I are doing this. Just being raised in foster care and getting to see all that kind of stuff around me, it was just a strong determination that I wanted to help her in any way I can.”
The event also supports local artists and vendors. The show is not juried.
“We’re just out there to support those local vendors and bring some business back into our local area,” she said.
Vendors include such things as homemade jewelry, repurposed furniture, antiques, crafts, canned goods and more. They are still accepting vendors.
“It’s just a little bit of everything,” Firestine said. “It’s a great venue of different vendors coming together.”
The market is located at 508 SW 100th in Augusta.
While Firestine and Schild live in Wichita, the property on which it is being held is Firestine’s grandfather’s.
“That was part of the reason we chose it was the location, but also because there are several different outdoor markets in Hesston and Kechi,” she said. “We wanted to bring that into the Augusta, El Dorado, Leon area.”
This is the second time the show is being held, with the first being in the fall.
In addition to the vendors, SCARF will be out there handing out information on their organization. Also, the American Legion 189 will be there to help raise money to support the Sunlight Children’s Group Home.
