PARK CITY — The Andover Trojan wrestling team had some championship match setbacks in the Class 5A state tournament Saturday at Hartman Arena, but the tournament may be a showcase of future promise.
Freshmen Paul Stuart and Jack Maki both finished second, leading the Trojans to a 17th-place team finish.
St. James Academy won the tournament with a score of 180.5, followed by Goddard at 117.5, Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 101, Arkansas City at 100 and Bishop Carroll at 91. Andover scored 49 points.
At 113 pounds, Stuart drew Logan Terrill of Arkansas City. Terrill scored a takedown in the first period, a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third for a 6-0 decision.
Stuart ends the season 33-2.
Maki drew Parker Howell of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel in the finals at 120 pounds. Howell scored a takedown in each period, adding a pair of back points. Maki scored an escape each period, but fell 8-3.
Maki finishes the season 33-5.
At 195 pounds, senior Mike Lopez opened with a 7-2 decision over Cole Hoover of Salina South. In the consolation quarterfinals, Lopez was pinned by Caleb Ward of Lansing in 4:16, ending the season 31-12.
At 126 pounds, sophomore Griffin Bossingham was eliminated after dropping a 5-2 decision to P.J. Cheney of Kansas City Turner, ending the season 23-17.
At 132 pounds, sophomore Elijah Gordon lost by technical to Sam Kissane of Maize South 16-0, ending the season 5-12.
